Dear Aunt Edna,

Let's come straight to the point. I'm afraid I have to make the worst kind of announcement today. I'm going to make a stop at his apartment in the neighboring city and put an end to his days of terror. His unholy project must not come to fruition. I'm talking of course about my brother, Thomas. I'm doubtful of my sanity to be honest. That's why I feel the need to confess everything to you in meticulous and miniscule detail before I commit my maniacal *action*.

(...)

Other common kids had their baseball idols or their favorite rappers all over their bedroom walls, but our Science Boy had a wall of fame with framed pictures of his top five inspirational scientific figures: Isaac Newton, Michael Faraday, Nikola Tesla, Richard Feynman and Albert Einstein. To him they were reminders that everything is possible in the universe, but now I know that they were all nursing the beast of the apocalypse, each of them providing a body part to its unholy structure throughout history. My brother was the last vital link in that sequence.

(...)

There was something odd in his look, something that frightened me. In fact, I remember an episode that scared the *beep* out of me. I know, Aunt Edna, I should watch my language, but… You had to see it with your own eyes to get a real sense of what was happening out there. He mysteriously fell into some kind of trance, dancing and chanting among the rows of corn, and the world didn’t seem to matter anymore to him. Oh, the foul lyrics spoke no words; it was a song of numbers, a sequence of stupid algebraic formulas that echoed in my ears like a malefic incantation bent on destruction. I did not dare stop him, too terrified he would jump on me abruptly to cut my throat with his reaping hook.

(...)

My brother however appeared to be really pleased and he smiled a lot that day.

Only…

That smile concealed something else. I just couldn't put my finger on it. It's today I come to the realization the pocket watch was the beating heart of the Beast.

(...)

I looked at the weather channel, and it predicts the most violent thunderstorm of the century tonight which means, undoubtedly, my brother will try again. It's a race against time, and I've already given him a head start by writing all these pages. A quick glance at my watch reveals I've already wasted three hours.

Pray with me it won't be too late to stop him...

Your nephew,

Jonas Barnes, Jr.
